Welcome
and thank you for your interest in Memoirs of a Madam, a one-woman
play written and performed by actress Susan O'Connell. In this unusual
and highly entertaining historical play, Ms. O'Connell, as Denver
Madam Mattie Silks, tells the seldom-heard stories of the "soiled
doves" of the early American Frontier.
When the cry of "Gold!"
rang out from across the frontier,
thousands of men made their way west. Young, old, single, engaged,
married - all sought the promise of a fast fortune in gold. Far
from home, friends, and family, these adventursome men often enough
turned to the women of the oldest profession who had followed them
west: for comfort, an understanding ear, a friendly face in the
midst of a hard and cutthroat life, and more.
Madam Mattie Silks, owning
at one time Denver's famous House of Mirrors brothel,
charms, entertains,
and educates
as she shares her memories and tells the stories
of her girls. Along the way, Mattie chronicles a segment of our
history that has remained largely hidden: the history of the women
who tamed the men who tamed the West.
Susan
O'Connell presents Memoirs of a Madam with class, humor, tact, and
sensitivity. It is ideally suited to historical society get-togethers,

50 minutes, but can be as long as an hour or as short as
ten minutes, depending on your need. Fee for the performance is
